Red Flags to Watch for When Choosing a New Brazilian Waxer

We need to talk.
Recently, one of my clients couldn’t get on my schedule and decided to book a Brazilian wax with someone she found online. What she expected to be a quick, routine service turned into a traumatic experience. The wax was too hot and burned her skin. It got stuck and couldn’t be removed properly. The waxer resorted to using scissors—and those, too, got stuck. It was painful and frightening... and definitely should not have happened.
This story breaks my heart and reinforces something I tell every client: If you can’t get on my books—please, call me. Let me know what's going on. I may be able to squeeze you in or help you figure out the safest next step. I also strongly encourage you to book your appointments one season in advance so you’re never scrambling.
That said, I know life happens, and sometimes you do need to see someone else. If that moment comes, I want you to feel empowered and prepared. Here are some essential red flags to watch out for when choosing a new Brazilian waxer:

1. No Gloves? No Go.
Your waxer should always wear gloves—no exceptions. This is a basic hygiene standard and protects both of you from infections or cross-contamination.
2. If the Wax Feels Too Hot, Say Something.
If the wax feels like it’s burning your skin, stop the service immediately. Wax should be warm, never scalding. Trust your body and your instincts.
3. Double Dipping is a Dealbreaker.
A new stick should be used every single time the wax is applied. If you see your waxer "double-dipping" (reusing the same stick in the wax pot), that’s unsanitary and an absolute red flag.
4. No License, No Service.
Your waxer should have a valid license in either cosmetology or esthetics. Don’t be shy—ask to see it. Check that the name matches and that the license is up to date.
5. Lack of Cleanliness
The room should be clean, tools sanitized, and the space prepped just for you. If it looks like someone just left and nothing was wiped down—run. It should smell clean too. Look for disinfectants on the counter (usually a glass container filled with Barbicide). Also, pay attention to whether they're sanitizing their hands. You can always ask them to.
6. They Can’t Answer Your Questions
A professional waxer won’t be offended if you ask about the products they’re using. In fact, they’ll likely appreciate your awareness - remember, we are beauty geeks so they'll probably love talking to you about it! When you're considering booking with them, reach out to ask what products they use so you can research them ahead of time—especially if you have sensitive skin.
7. They Make You Feel Uncomfortable
This is your body, your space, and your experience. If someone makes you feel judged, uneasy, or disregarded in any way—that’s a red flag. You deserve to feel safe and respected.
8. They Don’t Encourage Open Communication
After a wax, your skin may react in unexpected ways. Always feel comfortable reaching out if you experience irritation or have questions. A good waxer will never make you feel like a burden for speaking up. They should also counsel you on after-care and how you can get in touch with them if you have any questions after your appointment.
9. They’re Hard to Research
Before you go, do your homework. Look for reviews. If you can’t find any online or their presence seems inconsistent or vague, take that as a sign to dig deeper—or keep looking.
REMEMBER: You Are Always in Control
You are a paying client and have the right to stop a service at any time, for any reason. Your comfort and consent are the most important parts of any appointment. If something doesn’t feel right—speak up or walk out. Read that again!
Your skin deserves the best care, and you deserve peace of mind. While I always want you to be on my schedule, if life takes you elsewhere, let this list be your guide to staying safe, empowered, and protected. And of course—if you're ever unsure, I’m just a call away.
Stay safe 🖤
